Suggested Use

How to use

Use TXA Face Serum once daily in the morning, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Your doctor will confirm your dose during your consultation. Some women may be prescribed twice-daily use.

  1. Cleanse your face.
  2. Apply 3–4 drops evenly over your whole face, not just the darker patches.
  3. Follow with your moisturiser.
  4. Finish with SPF 50.

Apply TXA to your whole face rather than spot-treating. Melasma often has diffuse, less-defined borders, so treating only the areas you can see may leave a noticeable edge.

Don’t skip your SPF

Daily SPF 50 is an essential part of melasma treatment. UV and visible light can both worsen melasma, and sun exposure in Singapore occurs year-round.

For additional protection against visible light, choose a sunscreen containing iron oxides, which generally provides better visible-light protection than clear sunscreens.

When should you expect results?

Give the treatment around three months before deciding how well it is working. Clinical trials ran for 12 weeks, with measurable improvement beginning from around week four.

If you develop a reaction to TXA, stop using it and contact us.

How TXA Works for Pigmentation-Prone Skin

TXA Face Serum is a prescription serum for melasma and stubborn pigmentation. It combines tranexamic acid with niacinamide.

Melasma is an ongoing process that causes your skin to produce excess pigment. That is why ordinary brightening creams may not be enough.

Tranexamic acid helps turn down the signals that tell your skin to produce excess pigment, while niacinamide helps reduce the transfer of pigment into surrounding skin cells. Together, they target pigmentation at different stages of the process.

Why pigmentation gets harder to manage in midlife

Two things tend to happen at the same time: years of accumulated sun exposure, and changing hormones.

Oestrogen can directly affect the cells that produce pigment. These cells respond to oestrogen, which can increase melanin production and the amount of pigment transferred into the surrounding skin.⁸ ⁹

This may help explain why melasma can become more unpredictable during perimenopause. Hormones do not simply decline. Oestrogen can rise and fall significantly before eventually settling at a lower level. Melasma that first appeared during pregnancy can resurface, and pigmentation that once faded within months may linger for much longer.

As skin becomes thinner and more sensitive, irritation can trigger more pigment production. A spot, scratch or overly aggressive treatment may therefore leave a mark that takes much longer to fade.

What women in midlife usually describe

  • Brown or greyish patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jawline
  • Pigmentation from a past pregnancy that never fully cleared and has darkened again
  • Marks from spots or minor irritation that take months rather than weeks to fade
  • Skin that looks blotchy and uneven rather than evenly toned, even under makeup
  • Pigmentation that changes with heat and sun, and no longer responds to what used to work

How topical tranexamic acid works

Tranexamic acid is best known as a medicine used to reduce heavy bleeding. When used on the skin, it can also help treat pigmentation.

It works by turning down the signals that tell your skin to make excess pigment. This helps address one of the processes driving melasma, rather than simply treating the pigment after it has formed.¹

As the skin naturally renews itself, reducing this ongoing pigment production can also allow existing pigmentation to gradually fade. So tranexamic acid is not just about preventing new pigment. It can help existing pigmentation become lighter over time.

It may also help calm some of the inflammation and changes in tiny blood vessels that are seen in melasma. This may help improve both the brown patches and the redness that can sometimes come with them.¹

What the evidence says

Topical tranexamic acid 5% has been studied for melasma over 12 weeks, including in direct comparisons with hydroquinone 4%, a long-established treatment for melasma.

Studies suggest that topical tranexamic acid can improve melasma to a similar extent to hydroquinone, while generally causing fewer skin reactions. A 2025 study of tranexamic acid 5% combined with niacinamide also found significant improvement in melasma over three months.² ³

You may start to see improvement from around four weeks, with results continuing to build over the following months.⁴

Safety Information

TXA Face Serum is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be used alongside your other skincare.

It can be used with Menopausal Hormone Therapy. Starting or changing hormone therapy can itself affect melasma, so tell your doctor what you are taking.

Before you start

  • Patch test for a few days. Apply a small amount to one area of your face or neck and watch for a reaction.
  • Discontinue if irritation occurs. Mild dryness, redness or tingling in the first few weeks is common.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been reported in a small number of patients using topical tranexamic acid. Melasma-prone skin produces more pigment when irritated, so contact us if the serum stings or leaves lasting redness.
  • Tell your doctor about any personal or family history of blood clots, stroke or clotting disorders, and about any hormonal contraception or hormone therapy you use.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.
  • Do not apply to broken, raw or actively inflamed skin.
  • If you are also starting a retinoid such as ATRA Face Cream, introduce them one at a time.

Melasma is a chronic condition. It is managed rather than cured completely, and it can return with sun exposure, heat and hormonal change.

TXA Face Serum is a prescription product and is dispensed after a video consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is TXA Face Serum for?

TXA Face Serum is prescribed for persistent pigmentation, particularly melasma and pigmentation influenced by hormones and sun exposure.

It may be suitable if you have:

  • Melasma on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or nose
  • Pigmentation that appeared during pregnancy or changed with hormonal contraception, perimenopause or HRT
  • Dark marks left behind after spots, procedures or skin irritation
  • Pigmentation that has not responded well to regular brightening products
  • Skin that does not tolerate hydroquinone well

Your doctor will assess your skin and medical history during your consultation and confirm whether TXA is suitable for you.

Why does pigmentation change in midlife?

Pigment-producing cells respond to oestrogen, which may partly explain why pigmentation can become more noticeable or unpredictable as hormone levels fluctuate during perimenopause.⁷

Years of accumulated sun exposure also play a role, and skin can become more sensitive to irritation with age. This combination can make pigmentation harder to manage than it was earlier in life.

If you use HRT and notice a significant change in your pigmentation, let your doctor know. The evidence linking HRT with melasma remains limited, but hormonal changes may influence pigmentation in some women.

Will it help marks left behind by spots?

Possibly. Tranexamic acid has also been studied for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, although the evidence is stronger for melasma.¹

Can it help pigmentation from pregnancy?

Often, yes. Melasma that develops during pregnancy may fade after delivery, but some pigmentation persists or returns later. TXA may help with persistent pigmentation.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. If your circumstances change while using TXA, stop and contact us.

Isn't tranexamic acid a medicine for heavy periods?

Yes. Tranexamic acid is also used as an oral medicine to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. When applied to the skin at 5%, it works locally on pathways involved in pigmentation.

Is it an exfoliating acid, like glycolic or salicylic acid?

No. Despite its name, tranexamic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It does not remove or peel the surface layer of your skin. Instead, it helps interrupt signals involved in melanin production and pigment transfer. This can reduce the formation and spread of excess pigmentation.²

Is TXA as effective as hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone has been a standard treatment for melasma for many years and can be very effective. However, it can cause irritation and is generally used for limited treatment periods.

Studies comparing topical tranexamic acid 5% with hydroquinone 4% found similar improvements in melasma, with fewer skin reactions reported with tranexamic acid.³ ⁴

This makes topical tranexamic acid a useful alternative for women who cannot tolerate hydroquinone, or who want a treatment suitable for longer-term management.

Why is tranexamic acid combined with niacinamide?

The two act on pigment by different routes.

Tranexamic acid 5% interrupts the signalling that drives melanin production, and calms the vascular component.

Niacinamide 3% works further along the chain, reducing the transfer of pigment from melanocytes into surrounding skin cells, and supporting the skin barrier. Barrier support matters because melasma-prone skin produces more pigment when it is irritated, so keeping the formulation comfortable is part of how it works.

Will it make my skin peel or become more sensitive to the sun?

No. TXA is not an exfoliating treatment and does not typically cause peeling or increased sun sensitivity.

Some people may experience mild dryness, redness or tingling, particularly when starting treatment.

Can I use it with vitamin C or my usual skincare?

Usually, yes. TXA can be used alongside gentle skincare products, and niacinamide is already included in the formulation.

If your usual products contain strong exfoliating acids or other potentially irritating ingredients, check with your doctor before combining them.

Can I use it with E3 or ATRA?

Yes, a simple routine is:

  • Morning: TXA, then moisturiser, then SPF 50
  • Evening: E3 and/or ATRA, as prescribed

How long until I see a difference?

You may start to notice improvement from around four weeks, with results continuing to build over the following months. Most studies assess results after around 12 weeks.⁶

We recommend giving it at least three months before deciding how well it is working.

What happens if I stop?

Melasma is a chronic condition and can return, particularly with sun exposure and hormonal changes. Stopping treatment does not mean the pigmentation will definitely return, but ongoing sun protection is important to help maintain your results.

If you want to stop treatment, speak with your doctor first.
