Suggested Use

ATRA is a night product. Use it once daily in the evening, unless your doctor directs otherwise.

  1. Cleanse your face and let it dry completely
  2. Apply a pea-sized amount to the whole face, avoiding the eyelids, the corners of the nose and the lips
  3. Follow with your night moisturiser
  4. In the morning, finish with SPF 50

Begin with two to three nights a week and build up as your skin tolerates it. Most women reach nightly use within four to six weeks. Some settle at three or four nights a week, and that is fine.

If your skin feels tight, apply your moisturiser first and the ATRA on top. A pea-sized amount covers the whole face.

Give it 3-6 months for the treatment to show visible changes in your face.

Storage and shelf life

Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the pump closed. The airless pump protects the actives, so there is no need to decant the product.

Use within 6 months of receiving it. Do not share it with anyone else. It has been prescribed for you.

How Tretinoin Works for Midlife Skin

ATRA Face Cream is a prescription night cream for skin that has become less smooth, firm and even in tone. It combines tretinoin 0.025% with niacinamide 3%. Tretinoin is one of the best-studied ingredients for ageing skin, with decades of clinical research behind it. It works inside the skin to speed up cell renewal, support new collagen production and slow collagen breakdown.¹

How Tretinoin Works

Tretinoin is retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A that skin cells can use directly. Over-the-counter retinol has to go through several conversion steps in the skin before it becomes retinoic acid, and much of its potency is lost along the way.

Tretinoin skips these steps and works directly on skin cells. It speeds up skin-cell renewal, stimulates the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans (molecules that help keep skin firm, hydrated and plump), and helps reduce the activity of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases, which break down collagen after UV exposure.²

The evidence is strong. A 2025 network meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials involving 3,905 people found that tretinoin significantly improved fine wrinkles and identified tretinoin and retinol among the most effective topical treatments for uneven pigmentation.³

Why It Matters in Midlife and Menopause

As oestrogen levels fall during perimenopause and menopause, skin becomes thinner, drier and less elastic, with a gradual loss of collagen.⁴ Tretinoin helps target some of these changes by stimulating collagen production and supporting faster skin renewal.

Research specifically in menopausal skin is still developing. In one randomised split-face study of women taking systemic hormone therapy, 0.05% tretinoin produced greater improvements in dermal elasticity than glycolic acid after four weeks.⁵

With consistent use over several months, these changes can translate into smoother texture, softer fine lines and a more even skin tone.

Efficacy Without Unnecessary Irritation

We use tretinoin 0.025%, a clinically established concentration designed for effective, long-term use. In comparative studies, different tretinoin strengths produced similar cosmetic improvement, while irritation increases with concentration.¹ ⁶

The main challenge is retinisation, when skin may become dry, flaky or irritated as it adjusts. To improve tolerability, we pair tretinoin with 3% niacinamide, which supports the skin barrier and helps retain moisture.

The result is a formulation designed to make tretinoin easier to use consistently, with less downtime.

Safety Information

ATRA Face Cream is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin, with a slower start. It can be used alongside your other skincare.

Not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. Tell your doctor if your plans change while you are using it.

Before you start

  • Patch test for a few days. Apply a small amount to one area of your face or neck and watch for a reaction.
  • Expect some dryness and flaking in the first two to six weeks. Start at two to three nights a week and build up.
  • Stop and contact us if you develop persistent burning, swelling, or redness that does not settle.
  • If you have a history of melasma or your skin marks easily after irritation, start very slowly. Irritation can leave pigmentation behind, and that risk is higher in deeper skin tones. Your doctor may recommend TXA Face Serum alongside ATRA.
  • If you have eczema, rosacea or another inflammatory skin condition, tell your doctor before starting.
  • Do not use benzoyl peroxide at the same time of day, as it degrades tretinoin.
  • Use daily SPF 50 while on treatment.
  • Avoid waxing the treated area, as tretinoin makes skin more fragile.

ATRA Face Cream is a prescription product and is dispensed after a video consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is ATRA Face Cream for?

It is prescribed for cellular changes driven by sun exposure and ageing: fine lines, rough or dull texture, uneven skin tone, and loss of firmness. It is ideal if standard over-the-counter retinol has stopped giving visible results or if you are looking for an active with robust clinical evidence behind it.

What is the difference between tretinoin and over-the-counter retinol?

Tretinoin is pure retinoic acid, the direct, biologically active form of vitamin A that your cells recognise and utilise immediately. Over-the-counter retinol must undergo a two-step conversion process within the skin to become retinoic acid, losing potency along the way. That direct biological activity is why tretinoin works faster and requires a prescription.

Will my skin peel or breakout (purge)?

Mild flaking, dryness, and temporary skin congestion can occur during the first 2 to 6 weeks as cellular turnover accelerates. Starting at two to three nights per week, applying to completely dry skin, and buffering with a moisturiser helps keep this adjustment period manageable.

Can I use it if I have melasma?

Yes, but with care. Tretinoin helps accelerate cellular turnover and pigment clearance, but if it causes severe irritation, that localised inflammation can trigger rebound hyperpigmentation. Your doctor may advise starting at a lower frequency (two nights a week) or pairing it with TXA Face Serum to calm pigment pathways.

Can I use it around my eyes, neck, or chest?

Avoid the eyelids themselves and the inner corners of the eyes. You can apply it along the orbital bone where fine lines often form. Neck and chest skin is thinner, has fewer oil glands, and is more easily irritated, so consult your doctor before applying it below the jawline.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Topical prescription retinoids must not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Stop using ATRA if you are actively trying to conceive, and notify your doctor if your circumstances change.

Can I use ATRA if I wax, get lasers, or chemical peels?

Stop using ATRA at least 5 to 7 days before facial waxing, threading, chemical peels, or laser treatments. Tretinoin thins the outer stratum corneum, which increases the risk of epidermal tearing or burns from hot wax and energy-based devices. You can resume 2 to 3 days after your procedure once the skin barrier is completely calm.

Why 0.025% and not a stronger concentration?

Clinical trials show that 0.025% tretinoin delivers long-term collagen synthesis and photo-ageing benefits comparable to higher strengths, but with significantly lower rates of irritation and barrier disruption. The strength that works best is the one you can tolerate consistently over several months.

Why is the tube 15g?

Tretinoin is highly concentrated, and you only need a single pea-sized amount to cover the entire face. A 15g tube is formulated to provide a full 60-day supply at that daily dose. Using more product does not accelerate results and will only trigger unnecessary peeling.

How do I layer ATRA with E3 Face Cream, TXA, or Vitamin C?

Morning: TXA Face Serum or Vitamin C, followed by moisturiser and broad-spectrum SPF 50.

Evening: E3 Face Cream first, wait 2 minutes until dry to the touch, apply a pea-sized amount of ATRA, and finish with your night moisturiser.

Your doctor will guide you on the prescription treatments you need.

Can I use it with my other skincare products?

You can continue using your daily cleanser, hydrating serums, moisturisers, and sunscreen. Avoid using benzoyl peroxide at the same time, as it oxidises and degrades tretinoin. Pause strong exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic) and physical scrubs while your skin adjusts.

Does it make my skin sensitive to the sun?

Yes. Tretinoin accelerates cell turnover and thins the outermost dead layer of the epidermis, leaving new skin cells more vulnerable to UV exposure. Daily application of broad-spectrum SPF 50 is an essential component of the treatment plan.

How long until I see a visible difference?

Improvements in skin texture, smoothness, and radiance are typically visible between 8 and 12 weeks. Deeper collagen remodelling, increased firmness, and the softening of fine lines develop steadily over 6 months of continuous use.

What happens if I stop?

The cellular and structural improvements gained from tretinoin depend on ongoing maintenance. If you stop using ATRA, your epidermal turnover rate will gradually return to its baseline over several months.
