Excess Hair Growth: Breaking it Down

This content is meant to help you understand your symptoms and is not intended as medical advice.

What counts as excess hair growth on the face, chest, and back?

Excess hair growth, or hirsutism, means you have more hair than usual in areas like your face, chest, and back. This hair is often thicker and darker than the typical body hair.

This is a less common symptom of hormonal imbalance than other symptoms like headache and acne, and may be worth getting a doctor’s opinion on.

What causes excess hair growth?

Hormonal Imbalance: Your body needs a balance of hormones to function properly. When they’re out of balance, you might notice symptoms like excess hair growth. Early diagnosis helps identify the specific imbalance, allowing for targeted treatments to restore balance and prevent more severe issues like weight gain or mood swings.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome): PCOS affects how your ovaries work, causing irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, and fertility issues. Diagnosing PCOS early enables you to start treatments like hormone therapy or lifestyle changes, which can regulate your cycle, reduce symptoms, and improve fertility. It also helps prevent long-term complications like diabetes or heart disease.

High Testosterone: Women produce small amounts of testosterone, but higher levels can cause excess hair growth and acne. Catching it early means you can get treatments that bring testosterone levels back to normal and alleviate symptoms (e.g. acne!).

Adrenal Gland Issues: Your adrenal glands produce hormones essential for metabolism, immune function, and blood pressure regulation. Excess hormone production can cause symptoms like excess hair growth. Early detection means you can start treatments to balance your hormones, avoiding serious problems like high blood pressure or extreme fatigue.

I've lived with this all this time. Do I need to worry?

If you've been dealing with it for a while, it might be a sign of an underlying condition. Seeing a doctor is a good idea, whether your symptoms have been persistent, new, or getting worse. A doctor can help you understand what's going on and what steps to take next.

Also, keep an eye out for other symptoms that might show up, like:

  • Irregular periods
  • Acne
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Taking care of your health is important, and getting the right help can make all the difference.

This is what we suggest based on your symptoms.
